Arfa Khanum Sherwani is an Indian Television journalist cum anchor. She is known for the coverage of 2014 Afghan presidential elections. She is also known as left wing secular reporter among critics. She has more than 19 years of experience in journalism. She is currently working as senior editor at The Wire.
Peronal Life :
Arfa Khanum Sherwani was born on 1 November 1980 in Khurja, Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her intermediate studies in Bulandshahr and obtained a B.Sc. degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and then a diploma in journalism from the Aligarh Muslim University. Career :
Arfa Khanum Sherwani started her career in journalism in 2000. She Came to Delhi and joined The Pioneer as an intern, then She worked with The Asian Age as a trainee sub editor, and then Sahara TV as a production executive. In 2003, she joined NDTV as a principal correspondent and news anchor, covering foreign and minority affairs. She covered the Iranian Presidential election 2009 from Tehran, and Afghan Presidential Elections 2014 from Kabul. She aworked with Rajya Sabha TV until 2017. She was also a key member of Amir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate. She is currently a senior editor at The Wire.
Controversies :
- Arfa covered the Sachar committee report and Batla House encounter from a Left Side view.
- Arfa’s tweet mocked the Indian National Anthem, in which she placed gun emoji in place of gan in jag jan man, was widely criticised. It was a month after India conducted surgical strikes in Pakistan and the whole country was appreciating the action against the terror country.
- In 2020, Arfa Khanum Sherwani’s speech delivered at the Aligarh Muslim University over Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 was also widely criticised, after 42 second clip from her speech went viral in social media. Later She claimed that her speech was given a distorted intepretation to harass her. While talking to the Committee to Protect Journalists, she stated that she has received death and rape threats on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
